Artist's Comments

This is a 5"x7" etching on zinc.

Bleh. I do like it. Looks much better in person, though.

Gonna go in scraps soon, prolly.

edit: WOW.

Thank you so much for the DD ^zeruch and all the comments and favs everyone! This is really unexpected! I'm sorry if I can't get around to thanking you all personally.

It's funny... I only got a B on this assignment. :P

The process involves covering the zinc plate with an acid-resisting ground, etching into it with an etching needle the design, and then placing it in an acid bath for a certain amount of time to obtain various values. It is then filled with ink and printed.

Don't forget to show your support here! Artists have to eat. :D

Daily Deviation

Given 2008-04-06

Etching is something you do not see too often these days, and much of what is made is very narrowly conceived, but Torrential Downpour by =greeneyedsiren has an almost swift and loose feel, that still maintains a stylistic uniqueness. (Featured by `zeruch)

I love the overal style, especially for the clouds. I'm also curious to know your motive behind this etching :3
What's etching in zinc like anyways?

A computer is a tool; it will not make your drawings look better. You put crap into the computer and you will get crap back out--

Thanks!

Not much of a motive. My theme for the semester (in Printmaking) is nature/organic and the human creation. Pretty vague.

With the zinc, it's easy to etch once the ground is on.

yeah, and the zinc is cheaper than copper (which is actually better). so i'm using always zinc ;)
nice drippy, organic effect...some aquatint could improve the composition, i guess

I liked the composition, I just wasn't so happy with the inking.

I'm not a huge fan of printmaking, actually. We're doing aquatint right now though. :)

I liked using a ground in etching processes. I did a dry point needle image on a zinc plate and it was easily the worst experience I had in etching class just because of the effort needed to get a nice dark line.

I really like this piece.. the composition and use of line for shading, plus the figure you worked into the clouds is a nice subtle touch. For someone who doesn't like printmaking, you did a great job.

yeah, we did dry point on plexiglas, and it turned out okay, but I do like the process of etching with the acid and the ground.

Thank you :)

Have you tried solarplates? They're fun to use for etching. And you're welcome =)
